HE in FE: Identifying and Preventing Plagiarism

A Workshop for STEM Practitioners in Further Education Colleges

Monday June 1st 2009, Wakefield College, West Yorkshire

This free workshop from the Higher Education Academy, led by Gill Rowell from PlagiarismAdvice.org, aims to provide Higher Education practitioners working in Further Education Colleges who are delivering across the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths curriculum, with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to identify where plagiarism in student work is likely to occur, and to develop appropriate strategies to prevent problems recurring and to encourage student engagement.

The session will include practical exercises where attendees will be encouraged to share and discuss good practice in their teaching.

As a result of attending this workshop participants will:

    * Have developed an understanding of some of the factors why plagiarism is currently viewed as an issue in education.

    * Have discussed some of the strategies available to tutors to discourage student plagiarism.

    * Have considered approaches to assessment which can minimise opportunities for plagiarism and encourage original work.

    * Have considered how plagiarism detection software, such as TurnitinUK can assist with both detecting student plagiarism and also as part of a more formative approach.
