Sir Ron Cooke, Chair of the JISC Board, recently reported to John Denham MP as part of the Government’s ongoing review of HE. The report outlines issues that the HE, HE in FE and skills sectors in particular need to address if the full potential of e-learning is to be fully realised. The main recommendations include:
- a new approach to virtual education based on a corpus of open learning content is urgently required
- institutional e-infrastructures need renewed investment and maintenance to better support and utlise digitisation, research and other scholarly materials suitable for institutional and international collaboration
- institutions need to develop integrated information strategies, including more innovative use of ICT for management and administration
The impact on pedagogic practice made by these recommendations is acknowledged, along with the continued need for institutions to address both staff and student ICT skillsets.
