Upcoming BUFVC courses this June

The British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) presents a programme of one-day courses taking place at their central London offices in June. Staff in BUFVC member institutions are entitled to a substantial discount on registration charges.

BUFVC are developing a live videoconferencing option on selected courses (marked with *). Participants using this service will be provided with a PDF of the notes in advance of the course and then a videoconference feed of the live course itself direct to their institution. The access charge per videoconference site is £500 + VAT (non member institution) with discount rate of £350 + VAT per member institution site. Date: Thursday 5th June 2008, 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
This is one of the most popular courses run by the BUFVC. It is an essential one-day starter for those needing to use copy and manage existing third party content in their work and to deliver to students and the public in new services.

Encoding Digital Video for Streaming and Network Delivery
Date: Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th June 2008, 10.30 am – 5.00 pm
Day One: Introductory Course, 11th June 2008
Offers an introduction to digitising moving images for online delivery and tackles problems, which may be encountered in the process.
Day Two: Advanced Course, 12th June 2008
Designed to follow on from the introductory course, this course offers greater technical insight into the challenges involved with digitising moving images for online delivery, addressing considerations such as system software, compression and server technology.
Although this is offered as a one-day course, it is recommended that participants should have previously attended the Introductory level course or will already have experience of delivering time-based media via the web.

Moving Image and Sound for Learning and Teaching – sources, search strategies, appraisal and use*
Date: Wednesday 18th June 2008, 10.30 am – 4.30 pm
This course looks at the acquisition and use of audio-visual content for learning and research. Participants will explore sources of content and forms of delivery. They will also gain insight into pedagogic value of audio-visual content and how it may be used for learning and teaching.

Shooting with High Definition Video (HDV)
Date: Wednesday 25th June 2008, 10.30 am – 5.00 pm
This course is offered by the BUFVC for the non-technical to enable them to understand how to shoot footage with more competence. It assumes no pre-knowledge. This is a practical, hands-on introduction to digital camera operation. Participants will normally be organised into groups of two, and each pair will be supplied with a Sony DV camera kit for the day. The course is limited to a maximum of 10 participants.
